A Naturopaths Guide to Summer
Summer is such a joyous season, from the sunny rays and stone fruit, to the holiday catch ups with loved ones, and road trips adventures.
Here is our Naturopathic guide to summer living and loving!
Vitamin D
The sun is finally out and it’s warm enough to take full advantage of it and top up your stores for next winter. Please practice safe sun exposure, by limiting to 20 mins in the morning or evening sun daily. For optimal vitamin D absorption, try exposing the parts of your body which rarely see the sun, such as your underarms, torso, backside and back etc.
Eat seasonally
Enjoy eating fresh berries, stone fruit, and tropical fruits like mango, FRESH and not frozen, because they are finally in season and more affordable to buy!
For a great guide watch out for a post on instagram or facebook.
Nature therapy
Summer Holidays are the perfect time to book in some quality time with nature! Being in nature has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, support cardiovascular, immune and hormone health as well as uplift mood. So this is our prescription to you for the holidays; go on a hike, spend a day at the beach, get into your garden, or walk barefoot through a forest, breathe, meditate, picnic or bird watch, whatever takes your fancy – just make sure you do it !
Stay hydrated
Make sure that you are staying hydrated in the heat. If water is not your thing, try fancying it up. Add some cucumber or berries, look at food sources like fresh juicy cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelon, celery, lettuce etc… Or try iced herbal teas like hibiscus, peppermint, or lemon and ginger.
Set your Circadian Rhythm
Watch the sunrise and the sunset – you have the time and the warmer weather makes getting up that little bit easier. This practice can be such a lovely way to support your circadian rhythm and sleep cycle, but also to regulate your nervous system. 2 times a day to slow down, and appreciate the beauty of this life and our earth.
Connect
Summer is often a time filled with socializing! Try to connect to people that bring you joy and make you feel your best. Making conscious decisions with how and who you spend your time with is so important. This can be the difference between you feeling uplifted and energised, as opposed to drained and run down come the end of the holidays.
Rest
With all the busyness of Christmas, new years, holidays etc., it’s so important to take time for rest. There’s nothing worse than coming back from a holiday feeling like you need another holiday. Schedule in rest days and make sure you have enough time before returning back to work, to recharge your batteries, center yourself (and your home) and feel ready for the return.
Wishing you all a wonderful summer holiday full of fresh stone fruit, swims, nature walks and meaningful connections!
