What Makes This Different

The AirPod at MNHC is not a standard hyperbaric chamber. It combines hyperbaric oxygen therapy with molecular hydrogen — a pairing that very few clinics in Melbourne offer. (Practitioners will recognise this as mHBOT — mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy — operating at up to 1.35 atmospheres, distinct from high-pressure hospital chambers.)

Hyperbaric oxygen works by gently increasing the pressure around your body, allowing oxygen to dissolve directly into your blood plasma. This means oxygen reaches tissues, joints, and cells that normal circulation often struggles to supply — particularly in areas of injury, inflammation, or chronic stress.

Molecular hydrogen enhances this further. It is one of the most potent selective antioxidants known to science, meaning it targets the specific free radicals responsible for cellular damage and inflammation, without disrupting the body’s normal oxidative processes. One hour in the AirPod is the antioxidant equivalent of consuming 60 litres of hydrogen-infused water.

Together, they create a therapy that is genuinely more than the sum of its parts.

Who Uses It

The AirPod suits a wide range of people — from those managing serious health challenges to those simply wanting to perform and feel better.

For people managing complex or chronic health conditions

When the body is under sustained stress — from illness, treatment, autoimmune conditions, or long-term inflammation — cellular recovery becomes harder. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy supports the body’s own repair processes by improving oxygen delivery to compromised tissues, reducing inflammatory markers, and supporting immune function.

Many people navigating cancer treatment use HBOT as a supportive therapy alongside their medical care. It does not treat or cure cancer — but it can meaningfully support the body through the demands of conventional treatment: reducing fatigue, supporting immunity, and helping the body recover more effectively between sessions. We work closely with your treating team to ensure the therapy complements your broader care plan.

Long COVID is another area where we see strong and consistent results. The fatigue, brain fog, breathlessness, and immune disruption that characterise long COVID respond well to the combination of pressurised oxygen and molecular hydrogen — supporting cellular repair in exactly the tissues most affected. For many long COVID patients, this is one of the few therapies that produces meaningful, lasting improvement.

We also see strong results for people managing autoimmune conditions, post-viral fatigue, neurological conditions, and complex gut disorders where inflammation is a central driver.

For athletes and those recovering from injury or surgery

The evidence for HBOT in sports recovery is well established. AFL premiership co-captain Lachie Neale famously attributed a significant part of his recovery from a season-ending calf tear to intensive hyperbaric oxygen use — spending up to 60 hours across three weeks in an AirPod chamber (the same model we use at MNHC) and going from a declared season-ending injury to playing a game-defining role in the 2025 Grand Final in just 22 days. In his own words: “I’d never thought of doing hyperbaric chambers before — that’s probably the biggest thing.”

Elite athletes including LeBron James, Novak Djokovic, and numerous professional rugby and AFL teams incorporate HBOT as a standard part of injury recovery and performance maintenance. The reason is simple: more oxygen to damaged tissue means faster, more complete healing.

Post-surgical recovery follows the same principle. HBOT helps reduce swelling, supports tissue repair, and can shorten recovery timelines significantly. Increasingly, people preparing for elective surgery — joint replacements, cardiac procedures, cosmetic surgery — are also using HBOT beforehand to optimise their body’s healing conditions going in, producing better outcomes on the other side.

For busy professionals

The AirPod is uniquely suited to people who are time-poor and want results without effort. You can sit upright and work on a laptop, scroll through your phone, catch up on email on your iPad, or simply use the 60–90 minutes to decompress and think. Many of our professional clients treat it as a weekly reset — clearing the cognitive load of a demanding week, sharpening focus, and leaving with a level of calm and clarity that sleep alone doesn’t always provide.

The cognitive benefits are among the most consistently reported: improved concentration, faster thinking, better memory retention, and reduced mental fatigue.

For mothers and primary carers

The AirPod offers something genuinely rare: an hour where your body is actively recovering while you do absolutely nothing. No effort required. You can sleep, read, listen to a podcast, or simply be still. For people who spend their days giving energy to others — children, clients, patients, ageing parents — this is not indulgence. It is maintenance. Many of our clients in this category report that regular sessions are the single most restorative thing they do for themselves each week.

For recovery from travel and jetlag

Long-haul travel, time zone changes, and disrupted sleep take a measurable toll on the body. A single session following an international flight can significantly accelerate recovery — rehydrating tissues, restoring oxygen levels depleted by cabin pressure, and resetting your system faster than rest alone. This is particularly valuable if you need to be functional quickly after arriving.

For immune support and healthy ageing

Used regularly, hyperbaric oxygen therapy stimulates the production of new blood vessels, activates stem cell release, and reduces systemic inflammation — all of which have documented effects on immune resilience and the rate of cellular ageing. It is increasingly used by people who are simply committed to maintaining their health and vitality at a high level for as long as possible.

Our Philosophy

At MNHC, we believe the body has a remarkable innate capacity to heal — given the right conditions. Our role is not to override that intelligence, but to support it. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy with molecular hydrogen does exactly that: it creates the conditions in which your body’s own repair systems can work at their best. No drugs, no side effects, no forcing. Just your biology, doing what it was designed to do — with better resources to work with.

This is why HBOT sits naturally alongside everything else we do at MNHC. It is not a standalone treatment. It is one part of a considered, integrative approach to health that looks at the whole person — not just the condition.

The Science in Plain Language

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy? Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment in which a person breathes oxygen inside a pressurised chamber. The increased atmospheric pressure allows oxygen to dissolve directly into the blood plasma — not just bind to red blood cells — enabling it to reach tissues, joints, and cells that normal circulation may struggle to supply. At therapeutic pressure, oxygen penetrates deeper into damaged, inflamed, or oxygen-depleted tissue, accelerating the body’s natural repair processes.

At MNHC, this is enhanced further with the addition of molecular hydrogen, making it one of the most advanced wellness HBOT experiences available in Melbourne.

When oxygen is delivered under increased pressure, it dissolves into the blood plasma rather than simply binding to red blood cells. This is significant because plasma can reach areas that red blood cells — which are relatively large — cannot easily access: micro-damaged tissue, areas of poor circulation, inflamed joints, and neural tissue.

Molecular hydrogen, added to the AirPod’s oxygen supply, works as a selective antioxidant. Unlike most antioxidants, it only neutralises the most harmful free radicals (hydroxyl and peroxynitrite radicals) while leaving the beneficial ones intact. This makes it highly effective at reducing oxidative stress without interfering with the body’s normal signalling processes.

The combination of pressurised oxygen and molecular hydrogen creates conditions in which the body can repair, regenerate, and recover at a rate that normal physiology simply cannot match on its own.

What a Session Looks Like

Sessions run for either 60 or 90 minutes. This includes a gentle pressurisation phase at the start, 50 or 80 minutes at therapeutic pressure, and a gradual depressurisation before you exit. Most clients use the full time to relax, work, or sleep — the pressurisation and depressurisation phases are part of the therapeutic experience, not dead time.

You arrive, remove your shoes, and step into the AirPod — a spacious, Japanese-designed chamber with a comfortable reclined position and room to sit upright if you prefer to work.

The pressure increases gently over the first few minutes. You may notice a mild sensation in your ears, similar to the descent on a flight — most people equalise without difficulty. Once at pressure, the chamber is quiet and still.

You can sleep, listen to music or podcasts, read, or work on a laptop. Many clients describe the post-session feeling as a deep, physical calm — similar to having had an unusually good night’s sleep.

Before your first session, we conduct a brief health screening to confirm the therapy is appropriate for you. We are here to answer questions and ensure you get the most from each session.

DurationPrice
60 min — single session$75
60 min — 5 session pack$325
60 min — 10 session pack$590
90 min — single session$115

For conditions requiring an intensive recovery protocol, we recommend starting with a block of 10 sessions over 2–3 weeks. For maintenance and general wellness, weekly or fortnightly sessions work well for most clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy used for?

HBOT is used for a wide range of purposes including sports injury recovery, post-surgical healing, long COVID, chronic fatigue, autoimmune conditions, cancer supportive care, immune support, healthy ageing, jetlag recovery, and general cognitive and physical performance optimisation.

What is the difference between hyperbaric oxygen therapy and mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Hospital-grade HBOT operates at 2.0 to 3.0 atmospheres and is used for specific acute medical conditions under medical supervision. The AirPod operates at up to 1.35 atmospheres — what practitioners refer to as mild or mHBOT — which is safe for regular wellness use without a medical referral, while still delivering meaningful therapeutic benefit. Importantly, the AirPod adds molecular hydrogen, which hospital chambers do not offer.

Is this the same as hospital hyperbaric therapy?

No. Hospital HBOT uses much higher pressures — typically 2.0 to 3.0 atmospheres — and is prescribed for specific acute medical conditions. The AirPod operates at up to 1.35 atmospheres, which makes it safe for regular wellness use without a medical referral. The addition of molecular hydrogen is something hospital chambers don’t offer at all.

What does molecular hydrogen do in HBOT?

Molecular hydrogen acts as a selective antioxidant, neutralising the most harmful free radicals — specifically hydroxyl and peroxynitrite radicals — responsible for cellular damage and inflammation, without interfering with the body’s beneficial oxidative processes. One hour in the AirPod is the antioxidant equivalent of consuming 60 litres of hydrogen-infused water.

How long is a session?

Sessions run for 60 or 90 minutes in total. This includes gentle pressurisation at the start, 50 or 80 minutes at therapeutic pressure, and a gradual depressurisation phase before you exit.

How much does hyperbaric oxygen therapy cost in Melbourne?

At MNHC, a 60-minute single session is $75 and a 90-minute session is $120. Multi-session packs reduce the per-session cost: a 10-session pack of 60-minute sessions is $590, and a 10-session pack of 90-minute sessions is $890.

How many sessions will I need?

For acute recovery (injury, post-surgery, post-travel), even a single session produces noticeable results. For chronic conditions or performance goals, a course of 10 sessions over two to three weeks typically produces the most significant change. After that, regular maintenance sessions — weekly or fortnightly — sustain the benefits.

Does hyperbaric oxygen therapy help with long COVID?

Yes. The fatigue, brain fog, breathlessness, and immune disruption associated with long COVID respond well to HBOT combined with molecular hydrogen. The therapy supports cellular repair in the tissues most affected by post-viral inflammation and oxygen deprivation. Many long COVID patients report meaningful improvement after a course of sessions.

Can HBOT support cancer patients?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is used as a supportive therapy alongside conventional cancer treatment — not as a treatment for cancer itself. It can help reduce fatigue, support immune function, and assist the body in recovering more effectively between chemotherapy or radiation sessions. We work in coordination with your treating medical team.

Can I use it alongside my other treatments at MNHC?

Absolutely. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy integrates naturally with naturopathic treatment, nutritional therapy, and the other modalities we offer. In many cases, combining therapies produces outcomes that neither would achieve alone.

Is it safe if I’m undergoing cancer treatment?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is generally very well tolerated alongside conventional cancer treatment. We assess each client individually and maintain communication with your treating team. There are a small number of contraindications — we discuss these at your screening appointment.

Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy safe?

Yes. At the pressures used in the AirPod, HBOT has an excellent safety profile and is suitable for most people. Before your first session we conduct a brief health screening. It is not recommended for people with certain ear or sinus conditions, untreated pneumothorax, or some other specific contraindications — which we assess individually.

Is it claustrophobic?

The AirPod is spacious, well-lit, and designed to feel comfortable rather than clinical. Most clients who arrive concerned about claustrophobia find that it’s not an issue in practice. You are in control of the session and can exit if needed.

Can I work inside the AirPod during my session?

Yes. The AirPod is spacious enough to sit upright and use a laptop, tablet, or phone. Many professional clients use the time to catch up on email, take calls via headphones, or watch something. Others use it to rest, sleep, or listen to podcasts.

Are there any side effects?

The therapy has an excellent safety profile. The most common experience is mild ear pressure during pressurisation, which resolves quickly. A small number of people feel temporarily tired after their first session — this typically passes and reverses with subsequent sessions.
